National Teens Survey
National Teens Survey, 2008
This survey was undertaken by the Irish Universities Nutrition Alliance which is made up of three academic nutrition units from University College Cork, University of Ulster and Trinity College Dublin. A total of 441 13 - 17 year olds took part in this diet and lifestyle survey. The Nutrition and Health Foundation provided partial funding for this research.
Some of the key findings include:
One-fifth of Irish teenagers are overweight or obese
Teenagers fall well below the recommended intake of 400g a day of fruit and vegetables with a combined intake of just over 200g a day. One third did not eat any fruit in the day.
Four out of five teenagers are not getting enough dietary fibre
Over 50% of teenagers exceed the recommended levels for daily salt and fat
Over a third of teens had attempted to lose weight, with girls twice as likely as boys to diet.
