12.09.2016 Dr Brendan Egan to speak at the upcoming NHF Seminar on September 22nd.
Dr Brendan Egan, Dublin City University will join the panel of speakers at the Nutrition & Health Foundation Ireland 9th Annual Seminar ‘Food and Fitness: Fact V Fiction’ seminar which is taking place at the Aviva Stadium Thursday, 22nd September 2016 at 8.00am.
While much debate in health and fitness currently centres on dietary habits, such as low carbohydrate versus low fat, to Paleo versus vegan, when it comes to healthy aging, all paths to good health include exercise and physical activity in some form.
The terms “exercise” and “physical activity” are often used interchangeably, but the former refers to planned and structured activities with the aim of improving some aspect of fitness, and the latter encompasses other forms of movement and activity during our daily lives. How best to incorporate both into modern lifestyles, and how to provide health benefits effectively as a result, is subject to several myths and misconceptions.
Ultimately there are many ways to exercise or be physically active, so one size does not fit all, especially when specific health outcomes are targeted such as aerobic fitness, blood glucose control or declining muscle size and function with aging.
This session with Dr Egan will explore historical and emerging concepts around the role of exercise and physical activity in improving or maintaining our health, including the value of accumulating activity throughout the day and too much time spent sitting being a newly-identified threat to healthy aging. Some practical (and perhaps unconventional) examples of how to incorporate activity into our daily lives will be described.

07.09.16 New Speaker added to the ‘Food and Fitness: Fact V Fiction’ Line –up
The ‘Food and Fitness: Fact V Fiction’ seminar will be take place on the 22nd September at the Aviva Stadium, as the 9th annual Nutrition and Health foundation the seminar has an extensive line up of national and international speakers.
We are delighted to announce that Sarah Keogh a dietitian with 20 years’ experience working in clinical dietetics and the food industry will join the seminar line up discussing the topic of ‘Food Intolerances’ & ‘expertise’.
Sarah runs Eatwell, a food and nutrition consultancy that offers workplace seminars on health and nutrition as well as advising food businesses on labelling and health claim regulations.
Food Intolerance & Expertise takes a look at popular dietary fads and the evidence behind them. From food intolerance to paleo, from gluten free to vegan, this session looks at the information and misinformation consumers receive on nutrition and the rise of the unqualified 'expert'. We take a look at the science behind the fads, the evidence for and against and tease out what we can learn and lose from fashions in nutrition. Nutrition is almost unique in that people with little or no training in the subject are influencing people's nutrition choices and impacting on health. Sometimes this is positive but it can also have negative effects. Good education in nutrition is essential in helping people to challenge and question nutrition fads. Awareness of what really makes a nutrition expert helps people know where to go for advice. Nutrition is a powerful way to influence health: let's help consumers get the best advice and not just follow the latest craze.
