Lifestyle Behaviour Change for General Practice
(research being conducted by Irish College of General Practitioners with partial funding from the Nutrition and Health Foundation)
In the Health and Lifestyle research of 2005, GPs were shown to be the number one source of healthy lifestyle information for consumers. However there is a lack of formal nutrition and lifestyle training for GPs
This project aims to develop an education framework that will assist general practice staff in the provision of healthy lifestyle advice to patients.
This project was launched in 2007 and involved the following:
an international review of best practice in the promotion of healthy lifestyles through primary care facilities
a qualitative research project involving GPs and practice nurses to determine the key issues and barriers to approaching patients with advice on lifestyle behaviours
the development of an appropriate behaviour change toolkit for Irish general practice staff to advise patients about weight loss, healthy eating, physical activity, smoking cessation and responsible alcohol consumption
The report from this work will be made available in 2008 and it is hoped that it will lead to a pilot project to assess the effectiveness of the intervention developed.
